Video marketing can be a great way to build confidence with your audience. By creating and sharing engaging videos, you can connect with your audience and build trust.

This is ideal business leaders (CEOs, Founders, entrepreneurs) who sell a service. If you’ve been thinking about making videos, but the fear of speaking in front of the camera as been stopping you.

I’ve broken down this guide into 3 stages, so anyone will be able to start looking and sounding in front of the camera.

Pick the stage that is right for you and your level of comfort. Then look to advance to the next, so you can keep improving. Here are the 3 main stages:

Stage 1: Practice offline. Build "lens familiarity".

Ideal for: New starters. You’ve never made a single video before, but you know it’s time to get in front of the camera.
Difficulty: Easy
Impact: Medium
Why do it: This will train your mind to speak to things that don’t give you feedback or visual cues. That in turn will make the camera feel more like a friend than a foe.
How to do it: Practice recording on your phone. But instead of facing the screen, face the back of your phone instead and look directly into the lens.

Stage 2: Go online in closed environments

Ideal for: If you’ve just started making videos. You just need a little help in getting better.
Difficulty: Medium
Impact: High
Why do it: This will get rid of the nerves and the positive feedback from other people in these groups will keep you motivated to continue.
How to do it: Find groups on Facebook that specialise in presenting or video creation. Ideally find ones that are active and have regular live events.

Stage 3: Go live - Make and post live videos

Ideal for: If you’ve been making videos for some time, but you feel stuck on a plateau. Or your videos take too long to edit because they have so many bad takes in them.
Difficulty: Hard
Impact: Highest
Why do it: Making a live video will override your need for perfection. It will also help you link ideas which is probably one of the hardest parts (at least it’s what I find).
How to do it: Choose a topic you’re going to speak about. Write a simple outline for it. Turn every point into a question. Then while filming, simply answer those questions. This will give your video direction. No need to be perfect.

Now It's Your Turn

That’s it. 3 steps that will up you deliver your message confidently in front of the camera. Do these consistently and you’ll start looking and sounding much more confident in front of the camera in no time.

But making videos is only a small part of the equation. You’ll also need to know which videos to make first.
